Kate Bae is an emerging artist working and living in New York City.
During her stay in Villa R Kate brought her sister as her art subject, in order to work on a new project called precisely “Sister.”
The project is about finding the root of their family history, through awareness and adjustment. By spending two weeks together at Villa R, inspired by a total new environment, Kate would like to rekindle her relationship with her sister.
The two girls have been living more than 10 years apart. They were born and raised in Busan, Korea, but Kate left home to study in US already in 1994.
So they haven’t spent immersed time together since childhood…
Kate went on a inspiration trip in India in 2010 where produced a collection of drawings, viewpoints and observations.
In her art projects Kate often uses an original technique that combines acrylics painting on styrofoam, sometimes also other objects, eventually taken by the nature. She can also include the wall, or even herself, as part of the artwork to create different layers and “conceptual dimensions”, therefore confusing the viewer on the timeframe of the execution.
For Kate self awareness has been a central theme for the last six years and spending time in the meditative nature around Villa R with her sister, might just be the key to open a door to something new and overall moving forward in her family relationship.
The artist is going to work on a photo essay, to publish later in a book format.
As far as making art, also Kate would like to find at Villa R new ideas, inspiration for projects, memories etc., in order to renew her perspective and to be more intimate with the world around herself.
